The 2018 Oscar Nominations are in!

They’re heeeeeeeeeere! That’s right, the Oscar nominations have come in. As usual, there were some surprises and some snubs that I may never forgive. Obviously, I have a masochistic relationship with the Oscars.

The Shape of Water received 13 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director (Guillermo del Toro), Best Actress (Sally Hawkins), Best Supporting Actor (Richard Jenkins), and Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer). This was followed by the wartime drama Dunkirk with eight nominations. Dunkirk received nominations in mostly technical categories, but it did receive nominations for Best Picture and Best Director (Christopher Nolan). SAG Awards darling Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri followed with seven nominations. As predicted, Three Billboards received nominations for Best Actress (Frances McDormand), Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson), and Best Picture.

Peele - Get Out — Jordan Peele directing *Get Out*

After being snubbed at the Golden Globes, both Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig were nominated in the Best Director category for their work on Get Out and Lady Bird, respectively. They also both received nominations in the Best Original Screenplay category. Gerwig is only the fifth woman to ever be nominated in this category, and the first woman nominated in eight years. Lady Bird made out pretty well, scoring nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan), and Best Supporting Actress (Laurie Metcalf). Similarly, Get Out was nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor (Danial Kaluuya).

Even though he received nominations for a Golden Globe and a SAG Award, I was not expecting to see Denzel Washington amongst the nominees for his work in Roman J. Israel, Esq. This is his eighth acting nomination and ninth career nomination (he received a nomination as a producer on last year’s Fences). Roman J. Israel, Esq. hit theaters back in November with little to no fanfare. The film itself received middling reviews scoring only 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. While I adore Denzel, I was rather disappointed that Tom Hanks wasn’t nominated. His work in The Post was well crafted, and definitely worthy of a nomination. The other surprise in the Best Actor category was the omission of James Franco for his work in The Disaster Artist. A nomination for Franco’s portrayal of The Room actor/director/producer Tommy Wiseau was widely considered a lock until the Golden Globes. After winning the award for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy, he was accused of sexual misconduct by several women who worked with him at his acting school. The nominations were accepted through January 19, so I would guess that it significantly hurt his chances of receiving a second nomination.

Manville - Thread — Lesley Manville in *Phantom Thread*

The omission of Holly Hunter in the Best Supporting Actress category astonishes me. She was divine in The Big Sick as the mother of a young woman in a coma attempting to bond with her daughter’s ex-boyfriend. On the plus side, The Big Sick did receive a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. For those of you who are unaware, the film is based on the real life romance of writers Kumail Nanjiani (who also starred in the film) and his wife, Emily V. Gordon. Octavia Spencer’s nomination did not seem to be earned to me. In The Shape of Water, she played a very similar character to the one she played in last year’s Hidden Figures. Since she received a nomination for that film as well, I would guess that it is a formula that works for her. British actress Lesley Manville surprised everyone by slipping into the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as the sister and business partner of couturier Reynolds Woodcock (fellow nominee Daniel Day-Lewis) in The Phantom Thread. Her inclusion in this category kicked out Downsizing’s Hong Chau.

Also, KOBE BRYANT RECEIVED A NOMINATION! His animated short film Dear Basketball was nominated. Wow, just wow.

The 90^th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be presented on March 4, 2018 on ABC.

Oscar Nomination Predictions

It’s almost here! The nominations for the 90^th Academy Awards will be announced tomorrow morning. The question that hangs in the air is, of course, who will get a nomination? With the Golden Globes, Critics Circle Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Producers Guild Awards all bestowing their honors in the past few weeks, the front-runners have emerged. However, there is always that dark horse that sneaks in at the last second (I’m looking at you Michael Shannon!). Here are my predictions for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

The problem with this category is that the number of available spots varies from year to year. Since the Academy changed the rule regarding the number of Best Picture nominations (it can be anywhere between five and ten), the number has gone from nine to eight to seven. I am going to choose nine this year. The locks are Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Shape of Water, Lady Bird, and Call Me By Your Name. Get Out and Dunkirk are also pretty safe bets. Both have been nominated for Golden Globes, Producers Guild Awards, and Critics Circle Awards. They were also both on the AFI list of the best films of the year. The Post has the pedigree of an Oscar winner, however, its late release caused it to be completely blocked out of the SAG Awards. Other than the SAG shut out, it has been nominated for all of the major pre-Oscar awards. This leaves a couple more spots. I, Tonya was nominated for a Producers Guild Award and a Golden Globe, however, it received no love from the Critics Circle, AFI, or the BAFTAs. The unevenness of the film is probably what will keep it from being nominated in this category. The Florida Project is too small a film to get much more than an acting nomination this year. It has picked up a few nominations, but nothing prestigious, which makes me think that it probably will be left off this list. The Big Sick was widely acclaimed when it came out in the middle of the year. Surprisingly, it was noticeably absent from the Golden Globe nominations. It did gain some ground when it was nominated for almost every other award, excluding the BAFTAs. That leaves the real dark horse: Wonder Woman. The film has received nominations from the Producers Guild, the Critics Circle, and AFI. However, Oscar does not look kindly upon action movies. But, who knows? It may sneak in.

Gary Oldman went through four hours of make-up and donned a fat suit to portray one of the greatest figures of the 20^th Century. That is basically Oscar porn. He’s a lock. Newcomer Timothée Chalamet has received raves for his work in Call Me By Your Name, and he has been nominated more times than I can count for this role. Daniel Kaluuya, the star of the hit horror film Get Out is also primed for a nomination. If you asked me two weeks ago, I would have said that the only maybe on this list would have been Tom Hanks. However, the recent allegations of sexual misconduct that James Franco has received put his nomination in jeopardy. The voting closed one week after the allegations surfaced, so he may have taken a big hit. I thought Tom Hanks was fantastic in The Post. It was not a normal role for him, and he really knocked it out of the park. However, he did not receive SAG or BAFTA nominations. I am going all in with Hanks, but Daniel Day-Lewis may edge his way in for his work in The Phantom Thread.

The first four ladies on this list can probably sleep in tomorrow, since it is pretty obvious that they will all receive a nomination for their strong work this year. The only one I am not completely confident about is Meryl Streep. However, every time I think that she will not receive another nomination I am proven wrong. I have learned my lesson: never bet against the Streep.

Sam Rockwell is going to win the Oscar for his tour-de-force performance in Three Billboards. Done. Period. Nothing more to be said. If he has competition, it would be Willem Dafoe for his work as a motel manager in The Florida Project. Richard Jenkins has received much acclaim for his role as the closeted neighbor of the mute Eliza in The Shape of Water, so he will probably receive his second Oscar nomination tomorrow. That leaves two spots. Woody Harrelson was a great foil to Rockwell’s character in Three Billboards, but he may not be recognized next to Rockwell. I am going to bet on him, though. That film will probably walk away with a bunch of nominations, and I can see it receiving two in this category. All of the controversy that has surrounded All the Money In the World will probably propel Christopher Plummer to a third Oscar nomination. He was fantastic in the role, and when you add in the fact that he was cast, and filmed the whole thing in about a week, it will probably push him over the edge and into the category.

This is another one of those categories where the first four actress are almost guaranteed to receive a nomination. These names have been bandied about for months now, and tomorrow morning they will finally see all of their hard work pay off. That leaves one spot. I am going to give it to Holly Hunter in The Big Sick. The Academy loves her, and she had the perfect blend of humor, love, strength, and fight in what could have been a one note role.

Screen Actors Guild Award Winners!

Bell - SAG — Kristin Bell as host of the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

At last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, Hollywood royalty came out last night to celebrate the great performances of 2017. While the undercurrent of the #metoo movement was still present, it was not as all-encompassing as it was at the Golden Globes earlier this month. For starters, not everyone wore black. However, the show did honor women. For the first time in the 24-year history of the SAG Awards, there was a host: Kristin Bell. Dubbing herself the “first lady” Bell promised to take on cyber-bullying as her main cause. Also, all of the award presenters were women.

Amid allegations of sexual coercion which surfaced after his Golden Globe win, Aziz Ansari skipped the award ceremony. Nominee James Franco, who also was accused of sexual harassment after the Golden Globes, did attend the ceremony. While Franco did not say anything during the ceremony, his presence felt odd. This must have been a source of conversation amongst the attendees. Alison Brie, nominee for her role in the Netflix series GLOW and Franco’s sister-in-law, came to the actor’s defense. During an interview on the red carpet, Brie stated, “I think that above all what we’ve always said is that it remains vital that anyone that feels victimized should and does have the right to speak out and come forward. I obviously support my family, and not everything that’s been reported has been accurate, so I think we’re waiting to get all the information. But of course now is the time for listening, and that’s what we are all trying to do.”

24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Show — Sam Rockwell, Frances McDormand, and Woody Harrelson

The big winner of the night was Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, winning a total of three awards: Best Female Actor in a Leading Role (Frances McDormand), Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Sam Rockwell), and Best Ensemble Cast. This win is an important one for the film. In the history of the SAG Awards, the film to win Best Ensemble Cast has taken home the Best Picture Oscar 11 times. This also makes both McDormand and Rockwell a lock for Oscar nominations (which come out tomorrow) and the front runners to win an Oscar.

Also locking in their nominations were Gary Oldman, who won the award for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, and Allison Janney, who won Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her glorious work in I, Tonya. Sadly, the bird from I, Tonya was not in attendance.

Lies - SAG — Alexander Skarsgard and Nicole Kidman hold their awards for *Big Little Lies*

On the television side, Big Little Lies continued its domination of award season winning awards for Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard. There is no category for Best Ensemble Cast of a Television Movie or Limited Series, or Big Little Lies would have walked out with that award, as well. Sterling K. Brown made SAG Award history as the first African-American actor to win the award for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series for his work on This Is Us. The show also won Best Ensemble Cast of a Drama Series.

Veep took home the award for Best Ensemble Cast of a Comedy Series for its sixth season. Actor Matt Walsh, who portrays the hapless press secretary and spokesman for Selina Meyer, made a speech very much in keeping with his character. He even “accidentally” referred to the award as a Grammy. Julia Louis-Dreyfus picked up her ninth SAG Award for her role as Selina Meyer. Louis-Dreyfus is currently in treatment for breast cancer and was unable to attend the ceremony.

Awards and Activism: The Golden Globes Recap

A sea of black and an armful of gold. That seemed to be the theme in ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel last night during the 75^th Annual Golden Globe Awards. For the first time since the attacks on September 11, 2001, the award show was not really about the awards given for excellence in film and television. The awards were secondary to the very present theme of sexual harassment and abuse, women’s equality, and, to quote the great Peter Finch, being mad as hell and not taking it anymore.

Ever since the New York Times and The New Yorker broke stories about the alleged sexual abuse perpetrated by Harvey Weinstein, Hollywood has come out in full force to have predators removed, ostracized, and prosecuted. The sheer number of victims to step forward and say that they had been abused and/or harassed by Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K., Geoffrey Rush, and Brent Rattner, to name a few, proves that this is a behavior that has been allowed to go on for far too long. The men and women of Hollywood stood up last night to say, “no more”.

Actresses and Activists — A group of actresses and women’s rights activists

The attendees of the Golden Globes all wore black to show solidarity with the growing Me Too movement. Some also sported a “Time’s Up” enamel pin to honor the new Time’s Up Initiative. Time’s Up is a new group of more than 300 women of Hollywood and is “a unified call for change from women in entertainment for women everywhere.” Nine actresses went even further and had a women’s rights activist as their date.

Meyers - Globes — Seth Meyers letting us in on the joke

Host Seth Meyers did not shy away from any of the uncomfortable subjects of the evening. His opening monologue skewered Weinstein, Spacey, and Woody Allen. Meyers also mentioned President Donald Trump, stating that the voting body of the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press, were three of Trump’s least favorite words. The only thing worse would have been “the Hillary Mexican Salad Association”. The political discussion did not end with the host, though. Nicole Kidman, the first winner of the evening for her role of an abused wife in the HBO drama Big Little Lies, mentioned victims of abuse, and making a call for change. This began a trend of both male and female winners speaking out during their acceptance speeches. Oprah Winfrey, the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, gave an impassioned speech about equality and speaking out, which brought the ballroom to their feet. Natalie Portman, a co-presenter of the Best Director of a Motion Picture award, reminded the audience that the category consisted of only male nominees. Barbra Streisand was introduced as the only woman to win the Best Director award for directing 1983s Yentl. Once she approached the microphone, she mentioned that 34 years is too long between female Best Directors. It was quite obviously a night for women.

The big award winners of the night were Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Lady Bird, and Big Little Lies. Three Billboards won awards for Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama (Frances McDormond), Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell), and Best Screenplay (Martin McDonaugh). Lady Bird picked up awards for Best Motion Picture Musical/Comedy and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical/Comedy (Saoirse Ronan). Big Little Lies won four Globes, making it the most honored program in the television categories. The HBO limited series won Best Motion Picture or Limited Series made for Television, Best Actress in a Motion Picture or Limited Series made for Television (Nicole Kidman), Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television (Laura Dern), and Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television (Alexander Skarsgard).

Though the voting bodies for the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards do not overlap, a Globes win can be just the boost that a film or a performer need to receive an Academy Award nomination. The coming guild awards and BAFTAs will begin to solidify the front-runners, but you can bet that Lady Bird and Three Billboards will be leading the pack.

Surprised? SAG Nominations Announced

This morning Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash announced the nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. As always, there was some overlap with the Golden Globes nominations, but there were quite a few surprises and snubs. Let’s dig in.

Three Billboards 2 — Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand in *Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri*

Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri was the most nominated film with a total of four nominations. The film received nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Frances McDormand), and Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (both Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson). Both McDormand and Rockwell were nominated for Golden Globes, but the addition of Harrelson is a pleasant surprise.

Get Out 2 — Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams in *Get Out*

Jordan Peele’s horror/comedy Get Out was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Daniel Kaluuya also picked up a nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. While horror films are generally bypassed by Academy voters, this film has been generating buzz since it came out early in 2017. I think we can expect a Best Picture nomination and a possible Best Actor nomination as well.

Other foregone conclusions on the list include multiple nominations for The Shape of Water, Lady Bird, and I, Tonya. The Shape of Water and Lady Bird were both nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Sally Hawkins and Saoirse Ronan, respectively). Additionally, each picked up a supporting actor/actress nomination: Richard Jenkins for playing the closeted neighbor and confidant of mute Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water, and Laurie Metcalf as the pushy, but loving mother of a teenager dying to leave home in Lady Bird. I, Tonya picked up nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Margot Robbie) and Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Allison Janney). A quick aside: may I just say how thrilled I am that Allison Janney is finally getting some recognition for her film work? She has given standout performances in films for years, and it is good to see her finally breaking out of the “TV Star” label that has been firmly affixed to her performances.

Surprisingly, Mudbound, the Netflix film that has been garnering Mary J. Blige a lot of attention for her outstanding work, picked up a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. After the Golden Globes shut out for The Big Sick, the Screen Actors Guild decided to nominate the film for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Holly Hunter). Perhaps there is a chance at the Oscars, after all.

Steven Speilberg’s The Post, which received nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Meryl Streep), and Best Actor (Tom Hanks) at the Golden Globes was noticeably absent from the list of nominations. I honestly am shocked that Meryl Streep didn’t get a nomination. She breathes and she gets a nomination. All the Money in the World was also omitted from the nominations after receiving three surprise nominations for the Golden Globes. Due to all of the publicity around the film (and having not seen it yet) I do wonder if that was a publicity stunt by the Hollywood Foreign Press. They are the press, after all.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards will be presented on January 21^st. For the first time since their inception, the show will be hosted. The emcee this year? Kristin Bell.

And thus, it begins. Awards Season has officially started with the announcement of the nominations for the first major film awards of the year, the Golden Globes. It has been an interesting year with several good movies coming out steadily throughout the year. However, as December nears its end and the tidal wave of award contenders premiere, and I need to say goodbye to my husband for days at a time so that I can watch them all.

Unsurprisingly, Guillermo del Toro’s pseudo Sci-Fi romance, The Shape of Water, was the most nominated film with a total of seven nominations. These included Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama (Sally Hawkins), Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture (Octavia Spencer), Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture (Richard Jenkins), and Best Director – Motion Picture (Guillermo del Toro). The film has been garnering awards buzz for months. This film has been widely considered del Toro’s best since Pan’s Labyrinth, which was nominated for six Academy Awards and won three. Hawkins is a true contender for the Best Actress award playing entirely silent role as a mute janitor who feels a kinship with a captured creature from the deep. If she does end up winning an Oscar, she will be the third performer to win the Best Actress prize for a (mostly) silent role following Jane Wyman for Johnny Belinda (1948) and Holly Hunter for The Piano (1993).

The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri tied for the second most nomination with a total of six each. The Post tells the story of The Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham and Executive Editor Ben Bradlee and their struggle to publish information regarding the Pentagon Papers. The film was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama (Meryl Streep), Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (Tom Hanks), and Best Director – Motion Picture (Steven Spielberg). This marks Streep’s 31^st nomination for a Golden Globe, and will likely result in her record-breaking 21^st Oscar nomination.

The black comedy/drama/crime film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received nominations for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama (Frances McDormand), Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture (Sam Rockwell), and Best Director – Motion Picture (Markin McDonagh). I am going to take this moment to really plug this film. I saw it several weeks ago and I cannot even express how good it was. It wasn’t too dark and depressing, but the acting, specifically by McDormand and Rockwell, was impeccable. Go see it. Now. Seriously, stop reading this and go. Finish the article later.

As you may have read, Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World has been in the news a great deal, but not necessarily for its stirring performances or its compelling story. Unfortunately, the film gained real attention when Scott decided to remove actor Kevin Spacey from the film entirely after actor Anthony Rapp and several crew members from his show House of Cards accused him of sexual abuse and harassment. Scott spent Thanksgiving week reshooting Spacey’s scenes using Christopher Plummer instead. It obviously paid off. The film received nominations for Scott as Best Director, Plummer as Best Supporting Actor, and Michelle Williams as Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. Drama indeed.

Rotten Tomatoes best reviewed movie of all time Lady Bird received expected nominations for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy (Saoirse Ronan), Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture (Laurie Metcalf), and Best Screenplay – Motion Picture (Greta Gerwig). Gerwig, who also directed the film, was not nominated for Best Director, which I found surprising. Since the voting bodies for the Globes and the Oscars do not overlap, it is possible that Gerwig will join a very select group of women who have been nominated for Best Director at the Oscars.

A few other surprises and snubs: Daniel Kaluuya received a nomination for Jordan Peele’s horror film Get Out (the film was also nominated for Best Musical or Comedy), Denzel Washington picked up another nomination for Roman J. Istrael, Esq., and The Big Sick was completely shut out! I honestly expected Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordan to receive nominations for their screenplay, and that Holly Hunter would receive a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Oscars 2017: La La Land, I mean, Moonlight wins Best Picture!

Holy shit! What the hell just happened?!?! In a surprise twist, Moonlight took home the Oscar for Best Picture, beating the powerhouse that was La La Land, going into the 89^th Academy Awards. If that wasn’t surprise enough, the way Moonlight was revealed to be the Best Picture is the real story. Bonnie and Clyde costars Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were on hand to announce the biggest award of the night: Best Picture. Beatty opens the envelope, stares at the card, looks back in the now empty envelope, Dunaway gently chides Beatty for dragging out the announcement, she takes the card, and announces that La La Land is the winner. The cast and crew of La La Land file on stage to accept the award and make speeches. All of a sudden there is a commotion on stage and Land producer Jordan Horowitz says that Moonlight won Best Picture. From my own personal stand point, I thought this was a kind of “What a lovely film, we share this award with you” kind of statement. However, it soon became clear that Warren Beatty had been given the Best Actress envelope instead of the Best Picture envelope. Oops! Something tells me Pricewaterhouse Cooper may not be contracted for this job next year…

The sadness of the situation comes from the fact that neither La La Land nor Moonlight really got to have their moment. I am sure it was slightly devastating and embarrassing for the cast and crew of La La Land to be told that they did not, in fact, win the award that they were holding. However, even though everyone was pleasantly surprised for Moonlight, their moment was overshadowed by the gaffe. On the bright side, at least it wasn’t another streaker at the Oscars.

The other gaffe of the night was not quite as obvious to those of us watching at home. During the In Memoriam section of the awards, four-time Oscar nominated costume designer Janet Patterson was remembered. However, the photograph that was shown was that of Australian producer Jan Chapman. As it turns out, Getty Images, the company who provided the images for the segment mislabeled a photograph of Chapman as Patterson. Chapman later told the press, “I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson. I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered.” Oops number two.

The evening was not a complete blunder. Even though it did not win Best Picture La La Land received six awards, more than any other film this year, including Best Director (Damien Chazelle), Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Original Song (“City of Stars”), and Best Original Score. Moonlight picked up three awards for Best Picture (I think…), Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Casey Affleck was awarded Best Actor for his quietly effecting performance in Manchester by the Sea. Sea also won the award for Best Original Screenplay for writer/director Kenneth Lonergan. While Affleck was the frontrunner for most of the award season, his inevitable win came into question when information regarding a sexual harassment accusation from 2010 was released. Several industry professionals were vocal about not allowing Affleck to win the award. Regardless, he pulled through.

After three nominations, Viola Davis picked up her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Fences. Davis was visibly moved during her acceptance speech which was, arguably, the best of the night. “You know, there is one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered and that’s the graveyard. People ask me all the time — what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola? And I say exhume those bodies. Exhume those stories — the stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those dreams to fruition, people who fell in love and lost. I became an artist and thank God I did,” she continued “because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.” Host Jimmy Kimmel was not kidding when he said she would win an Emmy for that acceptance speech.

I realize that I may be in the minority, but I was thoroughly underwhelmed by Kimmel’s performance. While his low-key, lackluster delivery works for his late night talk show, it did not translate well to the Oscars. The opening monologue was unmemorable, with the exception of the standing ovation he requested for “overrated” actress Meryl Streep. At one point, Kimmel pranked a group of tourists on a sightseeing bus tour by taking them into the theater and allowing them to interact with the first row of celebrities. Initially, their reactions were sweet, but it eventually fell flat and just dragged on for far too long. Even the Mean Tweets (which I normally LOVE) were pretty unfunny. The only semi-funny part of the show was the ongoing feud between Matt Damon and Kimmel. I guess Kimmel really does aspire to be like David Letterman. After all, he two hosted a very unfunny Oscar telecast.

Lin-Manuel Miranda performs a prologue to his nominated song, “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana. Auli’i Cravalho performs the song beautifully, even though she gets hit by a flag midway through the song. What a pro.
The Salesman wins Best Foreign Language Film. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi sends American engineer Anousheh Ansari to accept the award on his behalf. Ansari reads Farhadi’s statement: “My absence is out of respect for people of my country and those of other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the US. Dividing the world into the US and the enemy creates fear; a deceitful justification for regression and war. Filmmakers can turn their cameras to capture shared human qualities and break stereotypes of various nationalities and religions; they create empathy between us and others. An empathy we need today more than ever.”
Stars sport blue ribbons to support the American Civil Liberies Union (ACLU).
