Kathy Bates was nominated in the supporting actress category this year for her role playing the supportive mother of suspected Atlanta Olympics bomber, Richard Jewell, in the film of the same title. Bates’s first trip to the Oscars was for playing Annie Wilkes in Misery. Annie is a nurse who comes upon injured best-selling author Paul Sheldon (James Cann) and takes him home to nurse him back to health. As his self-proclaimed “biggest fan”, she decides to keep him incapacitated and captive in her home. Bates won Best Actress for her portrayal of this despicable “Good Samaritan”.
