Tom Hanks received his sixth Oscar nomination for this year’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and Antonio Banderas became a first-time nominee for his role in Pain and Glory. Previously, they starred together in Philadelphia (1993). Attorney Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) sues his former employer, believing they fired him for having AIDS. Banderas plays Miguel Alvarez, Beckett’s dotting lover, nursing him through a trial and a death sentence. This film earned Hanks his first Oscar, and introduced Banderas to American audiences.
