This weekend, the 91st Academy Awards will be held and Hollywood will bestow its highest honor to a deserving few. If you are going to an Oscar party and haven’t had time to see all of the nominated films, fear not, the MoviefiedNYC team has done all of the leg work for you. Managing Editors John David West and Myrna Duarte share their predictions along with Award Season Guru Ariadne Ansbro and Eddie Mouradian cinephile MoviefiefiedNYC contributor. Below are our picks for who will win and which of the nominees should win.
Best Picture:

A Star Is Born and Vice
Ari–Who will Win: To be completely honest, this was a pretty lackluster year. No films really stood out to me. However, that doesn’t matter to the Academy. Based on the various other awards that have come out this year, I would say that the buddy dramedy Green Book will pick up the award Who Should Win: Again, I didn’t love anything. However, I probably liked Roma the best.
John David– Who will Win: Roma Who Should Win: Roma. But wouldn’t mind a win for The Favourite.
Eddie– Who will Win: 37.5% of these movies are genuinely bad, which is fun bit of Oscar trivia (and now that I’ve written this, it’s a fact!), which I think gives Black Panther a shot a historic win here. Who Should Win: Widows? Can You Ever Forgive Me? A Simple Favor? Oh wait. Black Panther is a movie that just succeeds at everything it is trying to do, while providing a point-of-view and vision that is unmatched this year.
Myrna– Who will Win: Green Book because it’s 1989 again. Who Should Win: The Favourite because it takes us to a world with a touch of Alice in Wonderland strangeness, part dream and part nightmare with three maybe four of the best performances of the year.

Ari– Who will Win: You can probably expect to see Alfonso Cuaron to pick up his second Oscar this year for his truly personal film, Roma. Who Should Win: While Cuaron’s direction was wonderful, I really loved the look and feel of Pawel Pawlikowski’s tragic love story, Cold War.
John David– Who will Win: Alfonso Cuaron for Roma. Who Should Win: I would love to see Spike Lee finally get a well deserved Best Director recognition.
Eddie– Who will Win: Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman. A lifetime Oscar, sure, but not undeserved. Who Should Win: Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman because my predictions are a house of cards that require the spread of awards over several films, and not just a sweep by Roma.
Myrna– Who will Win: Alfonso Cuaron, Roma and not 100% angry about that. Who Should Win: I really would like Spike Lee to win for BlacKkKlansman, one of his best films and for all the ones he has been overlooked for.

Ari: Who will Win– Rami Malek has picked up every major pre-Oscar award for his very accurate portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Expect him to add an Oscar to his mantle. Who Should Win: I actually really enjoyed Rhapsody and much of that had to do with Malek’s work. I am happy with a win for him. Also, I love Queen.
John David– Who will Win: Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody, his won GG, BFTA, SAG. Who Should Win: Bradley Cooper.
Eddie– Who will Win: Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody. Sigh. Who Should Win: Literally none of them? Cancel men! (Gun to my head, Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born, but this feels like the weakest Best Actor line-up in my 37 years of life.)
Myrna– Who will Win: Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody has been sweeping but the academy loves Christian Bale so I’m torn between them both bio-picish performances. Who Should Win: Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born delivers one powerful performance.

Ari– Who will Win: Glenn Close has been a powerhouse for over three and a half decades in Hollywood. How she has not won an Oscar yet is beyond me. Expect that to be rectified this weekend. Who Should Win: Ummm…GLENN FREAKING CLOSE!!!!
John David– Who will Win: Glenn Close, FINALLY. Who Should Win: It’s no secret, I think Glenn should win she was great in a mediocre film. for her lifetime of work.
Eddie– Who will Win: Glenn Close, The Wife for the iconic line reading of “I am a kingmaker” alone. Who Should Win: Look worse people have won Oscars for worse movies than the very meh The Wife. Just give it to her!
Myrna– Who will Win: Glenn Close for The Wife not the best film. Who Should Win: Olivia Colman in The Favourite, I loved that infantilized queen.

Ari– Who will Win: Mahershala Ali has long been a frontrunner in this category. I am fully expecting him to receive his second Oscar for his work in Green Book. Who Should Win: I loved Richard E Grant in Can You Ever Forgive Me? He and Megan McCarthy were fantastic together.
John David– Who will Win: Mahershala Ali, Green Book. Who Should Win: Hands down Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Eddie– Who will Win: I don’t even think Mahershala wants to win this award for Green Book. I’m calling for an upset in the shape of the wondrous Richard E. Grant in Can You Ever Forgive Me? Who Should Win: Richard E. Grant because there is no “meaningful glance” award, but if there was he would’ve earned it (and his Oscar) for the end of this movie.
Myrna– Who will Win: Mahershala Ali, Green Book Who Should Win: An overdue win for Sam Elliott in A Star is Born”

Ari– Who will Win: This is probably the toughest category of the night. Regina King won the Golden Globe, but was not nominated for a SAG award. Emily Blunt won the SAG Award, but was not nominated for an Oscar. The only three actresses in this category who were nominated for all pre-Oscar awards were Stone and Weisz for The Favourite and Amy Adams for Vice. I think that Stone and Weisz will split their vote and ultimately Amy Adams will go home victorious. Who Should Win: Rachel Weisz was incredible in The Favourite. Too bad she won’t win.
John David– Who will Win: Regina King. Who Should Win: Regina King, although Rachel Weisz is actually a lead performance, she is the more deserving winner. BTW where’s Margot Robbie? But here’s the upset that could make the night interesting, Marina de Tavira, Roma could take it.
Eddie– Who will Win: Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk. I think the upset happens in the Supporting Actor category. I also dread the film twitter whiplash that would happen if favorite Amy Adams (undeservedly) finally wins for Vice. Who Should Win: Rachel Weisz gives such a specific, pitch-perfect performance in The Favourite. I couldn’t imagine anyone else in that role.
Myrna– Who will Win: Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk a great performance Who Should Win: Rachel Weisz, The Favourite fierce performance and I’m here for those riding suits all day long.

Ari– Who Will Win: I would expect that this will be the Oscar that Spike Lee will win on Sunday for BlacKkKlansman. Basically, this will be a consolation prize for Lee not winning Best Director. Who Should Win: Can You Ever Forgive Me?‘s Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty created an enjoyable film about very unlikeable characters.
John David– Who will Win: BlacKkKlansman, this is Spike’s to take home–along with the other four nominess: George Froeschel, James Hilton, Claudine West, Arthur Wimperi! Who Should Win: For sure team Spike Lee.
Eddie– Who will Win: Can You Ever Forgive Me? Will pull out an upset here. Who Should Win: Can You Ever Forgive Me? Created two of the most indelible, miserable characters of the year, without ever asking us to like or pity them.
Myrna– Who will Win: BlacKkKlansman, Charlie Wachtel & David Rabinowitz and Kevin Willmott & Spike Lee Who Should Win:Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty for truly striking a balance in the story for what could have been the very unlikable character of Lee Israel and humanizing her journey.

Ari– Who will Win: Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma was the story of his family’s maid, a woman who helped shape his life. The deeply personal nature of the film will most likely allow Cuaron to win in this category. Who Should Win: The Favourite was wonderfully written for the three female leads. It also provided one of the funniest moments that I saw in film this year.
John David– Who will Win: Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara for The Favourite. But Alfonso Cuaron could take this one as well. Who Should Win: The Favourite…or Roma, other than First Reformed why are the others here? What’s missing? Bo Burnham for Eighth Grade.
Eddie– Who will Win: The Favourite because I can’t live in a world where Green Book wins an award for WRITING. Who Should Win: The Favourite was so sharp you could get a cut just holding the script. (Well, I guess you could get a paper cut holding any of the scripts, but like you get it.)

Eddie– Who will Win: Bao because Pixar. Who Should Win: Animal Behaviour. I haven’t seen it but it’s about an animal psychiatrist and all his animal patients. And that sounds like a goddamn delight.

Ari– Who will Win: I am torn between the two black and white films in this category. I think I am going to give the edge to Cold War‘s Łukasz Żal. That film was beautiful and harkened back to the films of Fellini. Who Should Win: Definitely Cold War. You know it is a beautifully photographed film when I take a moment during the film and just think about how exquisite the photography is.
John David– Who will Win: It’s artsy and it’s in beautiful black and white and the winner is Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma. Who Should Win: Cuaron or a very close Lukasz Zal for Cold War.
Eddie– Who will Win: Roma because the narrative is there and this will be where Cuaron picks up his Oscar (again, see above comment about House of Cards predictions.) Who Should Win: Roma because it’s spectacularly beautiful.
Myrna– Who will Win: Alfonso Cuaron, Roma is beautiful. Who Should Win: The Favourite, Robbie Ryan. I love the look and feel of this twisted world.

Beware, there is a possibility for Alexandra Byrne to sneak in if Powell splits her vote since she is nominated for Mary Poppins Returns as well Who Should Win: Totally Sandy Powell for The Favourite. I know that period films winning is a cliche, but those costumes are incredible.
John David– Who will Win: Sandy Powell for the Favourite. The Oscars love to award period costume dramas. Who Should Win: Would love to see Black Panther win. Ruth E. Carter’s costumes are central to the success of the film
Eddie– Who will Win: Black Panther. Who Should Win: Black Panther because it did something different than this category usually recognizes.
Myrna– Who will Win: Mary Queen of Scots, Alexandra Byrne Who Should Win: Black Panther, Ruth E. Carter delivered us to world we hadn’t seen Wakanda both futuristic, ancient and dripping in heritage.

Ari– Who will Win: In the very political world we currently live in, consider the Blue Wave cresting with a win in this category for RBG. Who Should Win: This is one of those categories where I do not really have a strong opinion. I am fine if any of them win.
John David– Who will Win: This is one of the tough ones, RBG could be the sentimental favorite but I’m going to go out on a limb with this one and predict that Bing Liu and Diane Quon will take home the Oscar for Minding the Gap. Who Should Win: It wasn’t nominated but Won’t You Be My Neighbor? The best in this list is Minding the Gap
Eddie– Who will Win: RGB is a subject people love in a movie people like. Who Should Win: Free Solo was a real achievement.
Myrna– Who will Win: RBG, Betsy West and Julie Cohen a fine documentary but nothing more. Who Should Win: Minding the Gap, Bing Liu and Diane Quon my favorite movie of the year both heartbreaking and uplifting.

Ari– Who will Win: I don’t think Roma is going to win Best Picture, but it is definitely going to win in this category. Who Should Win: While I really enjoyed Roma and will be happy when it wins the Oscar, the film in this category that really touched me was Cold War. Everything about it has haunted me since I saw it over a month ago.
John David– Who will Win: This one will go to Roma, Mexico. Who Should Win: Shoplifters is one of the best films this year and really should be awarded in this category
Eddie–: Who will Win: Roma, to spread the wealth and open the door for Black Panther to take home the big prize. Who Should Win: Roma

However, I loved the uplifting nature of Period. End of Sentence. Who knew that a story about sanitary napkins could be so compelling?

Ari– Who will and should Win: Detainment has been universally praised for its depiction of the aftermath of a horrific event. Also, there has been a major controversy surrounding this film in the United Kingdom, where it will probably not be released. For those of you who don’t know, this film is the story of the interrogation of the murderers of two-year old James Bulger in 1993. His murderers were two 10-year old boys who just wanted to know what it was like to kill. Bulger’s mother was not notified that the film was being made. She has started a petition to have its Oscar nomination revoked, as she does not like that the film does not portray her son’s murderers as little monsters, but as two children who did a horrible thing without really understanding the consequences of their actions.
John David– Who will Win: The batch of nominees this year ar the most intense and brutal in recent memory. I’m going with Marguerite. It’s the only nominee that doesn’t feature a victimized or murdering child. Who Should Win: Marguerite
Eddie– Who will Win: Marguerite! Because it’s the only one I’ve heard of!
Myrna– Who will Win: Detainment by Vincent Lambe and Darren Maho is well-acted by its young stars but absolutely painful to watch, it just fills you with dread. Who Should Win: Mother, Rodrigo Sorogoyen and María del Puy Alvarado an absolutely heart wrenching nightmare with beautiful cinematography.
Best Makeup and Hairstyling:

Ari–Who will Win: I really think this will go to Bohemian Rhapsody. The film did some amazing work with the music of Queen. Not to mention, mixing the voices of Freddie Mercury, Rami Malek, and Canadian Singer Marc Martel to create the “Freddie Mercury” voice in the film. Who Should Win: Bohemian Rhapsody
