What’s Golden and What’s Just Gilded: Golden Globe Nominations 2016

The nominations for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards were just announced this morning, and after the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and the SAG nominations yesterday morning, the Oscar race is getting clearer and clearer. This year’s Golden Globes will be hosted by a returning pariah, Ricky Gervais, in what will certainly be an equally entertaining and awkward night. Carol found more nominations in the big categories, and Mad Max: Fury Road stole nominations in both Best Motion Picture, Drama and Best Director. Rami Malek, getting the recognition he’s deserved since The Pacific, is up for Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama, while Regina King is up for her work in American Crime. Also nominated for their work tonight are Eddie Redmayne and Jeffrey Tambor for their roles as transgender women in The Danish Girl and Transparent, respectively. I note these last two in particular because I long for the day that I can type transgender actresses’ names in these categories, rather than those of cisgender men. Awards season, even if we’d rather not admit it, dominates the film industry, and we all cover it. However, it is our duty to do so with a mind conscious of how the film and television industry affects not just the art itself, but the world around us. Art does not exist in a vacuum, though maybe it would be easier if it did. It both reflects, and is reflective of the social and political issues we face in our everyday lives, so consume responsibly.

Without further ado or social agendas, here are the 2016 Golden Globe nominations. The ceremony will air  January 10th at 5 PM PST, on NBC. Don’t forget to tell us your opinion in the comments or on social media!
