Surprise it’s the 2016 SAG Awards Nominations

Trumbo
Brian Cranston, Helen Mirran in TRUMBO

Welcome back, my award season junkies! The stage is set and we are all ready to find out which of this year’s films will be crowned as favorites for the Oscar race. To that end, the Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations were announced this morning.

Trumbo, the biopic about blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, lead the pack with three nominations, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast. Brian Cranston’s turn as the egotistical but principled Trumbo earned a nomination in the Lead Actor category, while Helen Mirran’s performance as the anti-communist crusader and Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper was nominated in the Supporting Actress category.

Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of Lili Elbe, the first person to attempt gender reassignment surgery, in The Danish Girl was also honored with a nomination. Redmayne is generally considered to be a lock for his second consecutive Oscar nomination, however, it remains to be seen if he can be the first actor since Tom Hanks to win consecutive Best Actor Oscars. Newcomer Alicia Vikander also received a Supporting Actress nomination for her performance as Gerda Wegener, the supportive wife of Redmayne’s character.

Several other films landed two nominations in the lead and supporting categories: Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara for Carol, Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs, and Brie Larson and Jack Tremblay in Room.

This year’s nominations were studded with more surprises than normal. Helen Mirran received a nomination in the Lead Actress category for her role in Woman in Gold, a small film about a Jewish refugee who takes on the Austrian government to recover a painting that she believes was stolen from her family during World War II. Sarah Silverman scored a nomination as a restless wife and mother in the poorly received I Smile Back. However, the biggest surprise for me was the inclusion of Rachel McAdams for her role as investigative journalist Sacha Pfeiffer in Spotlight. The role that is generating most of the buzz from this excellent journalistic thriller is Michael Keaton’s. Last week, he was honored with the New York Film Critics Circle Award for this film. I have the feeling that most voters felt that he was a sure thing, so they decided to vote for a smaller film, thereby excluding him from receiving a personal nomination. He is, however, nominated as part of Spotlight’s ensemble cast.

The television nominations were not quite as fraught with surprise nominations. The ensemble cast of “Mad Men” was nominated for the final season of the period ad agency drama, as well as Jon Hamm for his portrayal of ad exec extraordinaire and ladies man Don Draper. The Downton Abbey cast was nominated for best ensemble, while the queen of the one-liners, Maggie Smith, was nominated for her role as the Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham. Fantasy favorite Game of Thrones also found itself with two nominations: one for the cast of the show and one for Peter Dinklage.

The show with the most nominations this year is the third season of Netflix’s House of Cards. The show received nominations for Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, as the most manipulative couple in the history of television, as well as a nomination for the cast as a whole.

Perennial favorite Modern Family received nominations for the ensemble cast and for Ty Burrell. Big Bang Theory, Transparent, Key & Peele, Orange is the New Black, and Veep rounded out the comedy ensemble cast category.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards will be presented, live, on January 30, 2016. The ceremony will air on TNT and TBS.
