Beauty is Embarrassing is a documentary about visual artist Wayne White. White, best known for his work on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, where he won three Emmy Awards. White is a vulgar, genius, eclectic and incredibly likeable man. It’s a fun documentary. It firmly establishes White as a kind of folk hero, a champion for those who feel like retching when confronted by the posturing of art snobs. Beauty is Embarrassing offers an awful lot to see and hear, a jumble of White’s work and life. This first time endevour of writer and director Neil Berkeley, is not to be missed.
