We begin our celebration of Oscar season by celebrating the previous films of this year’s nominees. Saoirse Ronan is celebrating her third nomination this year for her performance in Lady Bird. Ronan is the second youngest woman (behind Jennifer Lawrence) to receive three nominations. Ronan received her first nomination at age 13 for her role as the little girl you love to hate in Atonement (2007).
The New York Film Critics Circle Awards were announced today and there were plenty of surprises in store, such as Best Supporting Actress going to Kristen Stewart for Clouds of Sils Maria and Best Actor going to Michael Keaton for Spotlight—a role many consider supporting. One of the biggest surprises of the night Carol‘s Best Picture win, as Spotlight seemed to be the critical pick. Carol ended up winning in four categories total, including Best Director, Screenplay, and Cinematography. A few other highlights include a Best Actress win for Saorise Ronan, who played an Irish immigrant in Brooklyn, and a Best Supporting Actor win going to three-time Tony winner Mark Rylance for his portrayal of a Soviet spy in Bridge of Spies. Surprises aside, critical and audience favorite Inside Out took home Best Animated Feature—and well deserved, as well. Often, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards awards are considered a barometer of the Academy Award nominations, so check out the wins below and start your betting pools!
