Screen Actors Guild Awards – The Winners!

screen-actors-guild-trophy

The Screen Actors Guild Awards were presented on Saturday, January 30 to a room full of celebrities.  There are so many things to discuss about these awards, but I think we need to focus on the most important part of the night: Leonardo DiCaprio using a vape pen.

Leo Vaping

Leo’s a secret vaper

Just kidding. However, the SAG decided to show the Oscars a thing or two about diversity.  While the Oscars did not nominate a single minority actor or actress this year, the SAGs not only nominated, them, but five of the ten individual winners were minorities.  I would specifically like to point out Idris Elba, who made SAG history by being the first actor to win two awards for individual performances at the same ceremony. Elba won for Best Actor in a Made for Television Movie or Mini Series for his role in Luther and Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his work in Beasts of No Nation.  The latter award is a particular coup, considering Elba was cheated out of an Oscar nomination for his role in Nation.

The nights other big winners were, of course, Leonardo DiCaprio for his portrayal of frontiersman Hugh Glass in The Revenant, Brie Larson for her stirring performance as a kidnapping victim in Room, and Alicia Vikander as the supportive wife of transgender artist, Lily Elbe in The Danish Girl. So, what does this mean for the Oscars?  Well, basically Leo and Brie Larson should start writing their acceptance speeches.  In the 22 years of the SAG Award history, SAG correctly predicted the winner of Best Actor 17 times and Best Actress 15 times.  Vikander become a front runner to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, but I would not call her a lock just yet.  Over the next few weeks, Vikander will have to campaign hard to keep her edge. Since Elba is not nominated for an Oscar, the supporting actor category is the wild card of the bunch.

When it was first released, Spotlight was thought to be the front runner to win Best Picture.  In recent weeks, it has lost its edge since being beaten out by The Revenant at the Golden Globes and The Big Short at the Producers Guild Awards.  Winning for Best Ensemble at the SAGs, Spotlight has pulled ahead once again.

Over in TV land, the big winners of the night were Orange is the New Black and Downton Abbey which won for Best Ensemble in a TV Series – Comedy and Best Ensemble in a TV Series – Drama, respectively.  Uzo Aduba also won her second consecutive Best Actress in a TV Series – Comedy for her role as “Crazy Eyes” on Orange is the New Black.

Latifah SAG

Queen Latifah

Other winners in the TV categories include: Kevin Spacey for his role as the duplicitous president on House of Cards, Viola Davis, continuing her award season streak, as the lawyer we all love to hate on How to Get Away with Murder, Jeffrey Tambor as a middle aged transgender man in Transparent, and Queen Latifah as the incomparable Bessie Smith in the HBO movie, Bessie.

Finally, I have to say that the MVP of the entire awards show was 9 year-old Jacob Tremblay.  He and Brie Larson presented an award together, with Tremblay reminiscing about his first SAG nomination (um, that was this year).  He also snagged some exciting selfies with Leo and Rachel McAdams.  He may have lost the award to Idris Elba, but I call all of that a win.
