Movie-Still Monday: Purple Rain turns Thirty

Prince in Purple Rain (1984)

It’s been thirty years since the release of Purple Rain, directed by Albert Magnoli, and starring Prince as “The Kid.”  The Purple Rain soundtrack is still perhaps one of cinema’s greatest soundtracks. Is that hyperbole? I think not. Listen to Prince’s album today. The masterpiece easily holds up and stands the test of time. According to Billboard magazine, the first single from the album, “When Doves Cry,” became hit number one on July 7,1984, and remained there for five weeks. It was the song of the summer. The film opened on July 27, a month after its soundtrack’s release on June 30, and although the movie doesn’t equal the artistic level of its music, it has endured to remain a cult classic.
