SAG Nominations

Wow!  I can officially say that this year’s Road to the Oscars has been one of the most varied I have seen in recent years.  Cementing that claim is the announcement of the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.  Since actors are the largest voting body of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, the SAG nominations tend to be one of the best litmus tests for predicting the Oscar nominees and even the eventual winners.

It comes as no shock that the gripping true story 12 Years a Slave led the pack with four nominations: Best Ensemble Cast, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Best Lead Actor, Michael Fassbender as Best Supporting Actor, and Lupita Nyong’o as Best Supporting Actress.
However, the surprises seem to outweigh the foregone conclusions this year.  Some unforeseen omissions from the nominations are Robert Redford’s harrowing performance in All is Lost and the complete shut-out of Martin Scorsese’s latest film, The Wolf of Wall Street.  Lee Daniels’ The Butler picked up three surprise nominations, despite moderate reviews and being overlooked by other early critics awards.
I put it to you, my fellow award aficionados: What do you think?  What shocked you the most?  Any early predictions?  Meryl Streep is just awesome, right?! Tweet us @moviefiednyc.
