Movie-Still Monday: Fruitvale Station

Fruitvale Station (2013) – Ariana Neal and Michael B. Jordan

Per the New York Times we are expecting 2013 to be a breakout year for black films. Fruitvale Station is certainly making the case for that statement, winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. It was also screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where it won the award for Best First Film. The film tells the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old resident of Oakland California, and his experiences on the last day of his life, before he was fatally shot by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Police in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day 2009.
