Media For Brunch: Fede Álvarez’s Ataque de Pánico! (Panic Attack!)

As a result of the popularity of the 2009 Uruguayan science fiction short film Ataque de Pánico! (Panic Attack!), director and independent filmmaker Fede Álvarez was signed by Ghost House Pictures for Álvarez to develop a new project. That project ended up being Álvarez’s first feature, the the remake of The Evil Dead titled Evil Dead.

The production budget of the film has been reported to have been only $300. Fede Álvarez aside from writing, editing and directing the film, created the visual effects based on computer-generated imagery. After being uploaded to YouTube, the film’s reputation spread like wild fire by word of mouth, and received a boost when it was linked from Kanye West’s blog. Álvarez stated in a BBC interview: “I uploaded Panic Attack! on a Thursday and on Monday my inbox was totally full of e-mails from Hollywood studios.” Ataque de Pánico!(Panic Attack!) has been noted as an example of the increasing influence of the Internet in finding new talent for Hollywood studios.
