Golden Globe Nominations are Announced

Hello my little award season buffs! The true start of awards season began this morning when the Golden Globe nominations were announced.  Even though the Golden Globes voting body is the Hollywood Foreign Press, which has no overlap with the Academy, a Golden Globe nomination is the first step on the road to Oscar.

Noah Baumbach’s dramady Marriage Story received six nominations, the most of any film this year.  The film was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Screenplay (Noah Baumbach), Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama (Scarlett Johansson), Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (Adam Driver), Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture (Laura Dern), and Best Original Score (Randy Newman).  This was followed by The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which each earned five nominations. With Marriage Story, The Irishman, and The Two Popes all receiving multiple nominations, this propelled Netflix to receive the most nominations, with a total of 17.

Speaking of The Irishman, one of the big snubs was the omission of Robert DeNiro from the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama category. His costars, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, both received nominations in the supporting actor category, and the film was also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama.  DeNiro’s omission is most likely due to the surprise nomination of Jonathan Pryce for his portrayal of Pope Francis in The Two Popes.  Pryce’s costar Anthony Hopkins also received a nomination in the Supporting Actor.

One of the biggest upsets this year was the noticeable absence of any female directors in the Best Director category.  Greta Gerwig, Lulu Wang, and Lorene Scafaria were all shortlisted to receive a nomination for Little Women, The Farewell, and Hustlers, respectively.  However, none of them were listed among the nominees this year.  This is the second time Gerwig was snubbed in this category, the first being in 2017 when she was expected to receive a nomination for Lady Bird.  As a matter of fact, in its entire 77 year history, the Globes have only nominated five female directors.  The most recent nomination came in 2014 when Ava DuVernay received a nomination for Selma.  Dear Hollywood Foreign Press, it’s time to rectify this situation!

 

We will see all of the big surprises when the Globes are presented on Sunday, January 5 at 8:00 pm EST on NBC.  This year’s awards will be hosted by Ricky Gervais, who promises says that this, his fifth time hosting this event, will be the last time.
