BAFTA Nominations

Hello again, my cinophile friends.  Last Friday, our friends across the pond (aka the British) announced the nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) film awards.  As this is the final major award nomination announcement prior to the announcement of the Oscar nominees on Thursday, the nominees will likely be extremely similar.

After being snubbed by the Producers Guild Awards, Carol made a major comeback by garnering a total of nine nominations, including Best Film, Best Director (Todd Haynes), Best Actress (Cate Blanchett), and Best Supporting Actress (Rooney Mara).

The Steven Spielberg Cold War drama Bridge of Spies also received nine nominations, tying Carol as the most nominated film this year. The love for Spies has been cooling, as it was one of the earliest Oscar bait films to be released this year, and has been mostly forgotten with the exception of Mark Rylance’s performance.  Once again, Rylance has nabbed a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, making him a sure-thing when it comes to Oscar nominations.

Golden Globe winner The Revenant also did quite well, with eight nominations, including Best Film, Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), and Best Director (Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu).  BAFTA winner Tom Hardy was not among the nominees for the film.  While Hardy’s villainous turn in the film has garnered critical acclaim, he has only received a handful of Critics Award nominations for the role.

Rounding out the Best Film category are The Big Short and Spotlight.  While Spotlight is considered a frontrunner for Best Picture at the Oscars, it only came away with two other nominations: Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo) and Best Original Screenplay.  The Big Short’s director Adam McKay was nominated for Best Director, edging out Quentin Tarantino for The Hateful Eight, Tom Hooper for The Danish Girl, and Spotlight director Tom McCarthy.

There were a few other surprises sprinkled throughout the major categories.  Maggie Smith received her twelfth BAFTA film nomination for her role as a proud homeless woman in The Lady in the Van.  Her inclusion edged out Jennifer Lawrence for Joy.  Helen Mirren was noticeable absent from the Best Supporting Actress category.  Her work in Trumbo has already gained her a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, so this was a surprise.  She was edged out by Jennifer Jason Leigh for The Hateful Eight and Julie Walters for Brooklyn.  Thus far, the Supporting Actress category is the one that has no clear frontrunners.
